August is always bittersweet — summer days are fleeting, but the excitement of Appalachian opening its doors to our new and returning students is palpable.
Dear Families,
Life on the campus is busy. Summer school classes and camps and conferences are winding down, which will allow us a few weeks to ready residence halls for Fall 2009. Our exciting new curriculum is in place for entering freshmen.
Construction on the new College of Education building has begun. Our beautiful new dining hall continues to see record numbers of visitors each day while completion of the additional seating area progresses nicely. And...crews are working around the clock to finish the amazing new football stadium for our home opener. It is spectacular!
Although there continues to be serious concerns about our state budget and the emerging issues surrounding H1N1 as students gather for fall classes, we remain optimistic about the coming academic year. Your sons and daughters are in good hands.
Stay in touch, visit the campus, let us know how we can support your family. It is great to be a Mountaineer.
All the best,

Student Spotlight
Jonathan Meisner, Student Body President, Senior, Business Management
I grew up in Greensboro, NC (nothing too special about that). I have two younger sisters, one of which is a sophomore at Appalachian! I am a senior majoring in Business Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship. I hope to one day own my own business.
Some things that I am planning to do with SGA (Student Goverment Association) this year include raising awareness of what SGA is and how it can serve students by reformatting our website and actively visiting student organizations around campus. I would also like to continue to push for a 24 hour library during the school year and not just exam times.
Entering my fourth year at Appalachian, I have not met a single administrator, faculty, or staff member who is not truly looking out for student's best interests. This is such a student oriented campus and I am so happy that we as students have such great people who are there for us.
