Appalachian's Continued Commitment to Campus Safety
Appalachian will enter the semester with another improvement to the campus safety and security program. In June, the University completed the installation of the new outdoor campus siren warning system that provided four outdoor warning sirens across campus and the State Farm playing fields, in addition to one interior siren system at the Appalachian Panhellenic Hall.
Since the installation, the system has successfully passed several tests, including regular tests on the first Wednesday of every month. The siren system is designed to warn students, faculty, staff, and visitors located outside during the event of an emergency or disaster. The siren system is one part of the AppState-ALERT emergency notification system that relies on the outdoor siren system, campus e-mail, and the AppState-ALERT emergency voice and text notification system. Parents should encourage their students to sign up for emergency voice and text messages through the AppState-ALERT system. The registration information is located at emergency.appstate.edu.
Although the University understands how important notification and warning is, we also recognize that all students should personally prepare for emergencies and disasters through the development of a "safety mindset" and we need your help to promote personal preparedness with your student. While Appalachian is committed to providing technology, training, education, and programs to improve campus safety, the best campus safety program still relies on personal preparedness and individual decisions.
Every Appalachian student should think ahead and learn about the University's safety plans and procedures and develop a personal plan for how they will prevent unsafe incidents if they can. Additionally, students should also take the time to plan ahead and consider their actions should an emergency or disaster occur. Parents and students can visit the University's emergency preparedness website at emergency.appstate.edu for information on University plans, AppState-ALERT registration, and tips for personal safety preparedness.
Although the University cannot guarantee a risk-free experience at Appalachian, we can partner with parents and students to develop a culture of preparedness and a culture of safety.
