Appalachian strives to create a safe environment for students to learn. There are certain behaviors that can get in the way of a student's success. The Office of Student Conduct addresses behaviors that are violations of the Appalachiain Code of Student Conduct.
What is the Student Code of Conduct?
A set of community expectations, rights and responsibilities that all ASU students are expected to follow.
What happens if my student has been involved with a violation of the Code of Student Conduct?
Your daughter or son will receive an email and/or a follow up letter in his or her ASU Box telling him or her to call the Office of Student Conduct to schedule an appointment. The letter will also include the allegations that will be discussed with a Conduct Review Officer.
Do parents need to attend this meeting?
Generally, students come and do this on their own. Initially, the information received is viewed as an allegation and the meeting provides an opportunity to discuss the incident in question. Learning to confront situations as they happen is an important skill for students to develop.
How does the University determine responsibility?
Students have several choices in resolving their allegations. A student can take responsibility. A student can dispute the allegation and request that the information be presented to a Conduct Review Board for resolution. Sometimes a student can released from the process as Conduct Review staff receive additional information provided by others involved in the incident. If a student attempts to avoid the Office of Student Conduct, the Director has the right to resolve the incident in their absence. If a student is facing suspension or expulsion the university will go forward with the case even if the student has withdrawn from school.
Will you be informed about your students conduct record?
Generally, the University will inform the parent or guardian of a student 21 years of age or less of a second alcohol violation or a first drug violation for marijuana. We will also inform parents of a first alcohol incident if it is serious in nature – examples are: driving while under the influence, alcohol poisoning, hospitalization, arrest, and having a reading of .15 or greater on an alco-sensor. Our purpose is to open communication and to collaborate with the parent and develop strategies to help the student learn from this teachable moment. Notification is sent to the parent or guardian by mail to the student’s permanent address.
In dealing with student conduct issues, it is not uncommon for students to sign waivers which would allow more open communication between our office and a parent or guardian. Students may also sign a waiver allowing parents access to their educational record at the University.
Keep in mind students are learning to become independent thinkers and problem solvers. They need to learn from the choices and the decisions that they make. Consequences help with the learning process. It is not our goal to punish but to educate students. Sometimes students may even need to “leave the university” (suspended or expelled) with some work to do at home, examples are: counseling, community service, getting a job, and attending a community college, as a consequence for their behavior.
Does the University address off campus behavior?
Yes, we are concerned about our student’s behavior both on and off campus. However, our goal is to address high risk behavior or behavior that may put the safety and/or welfare of our community at risk. Examples include but are not limited to the following: driving under the influence of alcohol, felony allegations, selling drugs, behavior that indicates a pattern (students with multiple on/off campus violations for alcohol or drugs) and assaults.
If a student receives an off campus citation and has no history in the Student Conduct Office, they will receive a letter from the Office of Off Campus Community Relations letting them know The University is aware of the incident and is concerned. These citations are not referred to the Office of Student Conduct at this time.
