Family Weekend Join us for Family Weekend September 25-27

Immerse yourself in the Appalachian Experience and join other Appalachian parents and families for a wonderful, fun-filled weekend on campus during one of the High Country’s most beautiful seasons. This special weekend is your opportunity for a taste of campus life. Visit your son's or daughter's residence hall, speak with university administrators, faculty and staff members, attend a special concert and cheer on the Mountaineers to football victory. Bring your whole family and take time to meet other Appalachian families.

What is the Parents' Association? What is the Parents' Association?

We have had the privilege to lead your Appalachian State Parents Association. While we have 38 board members, all parents are members of this Association. We thought all of you should know or should be reminded of what this Association does representing you and our University.

Our first assignment each year is to assist with Orientation for the incoming freshman class. We are available to provide a parent’s perspective of needs, concerns, and information during these 2-day sessions.

The Parents Fund - support the Appalachian Family The Parents Fund - support the Appalachian Family

While many universities use the term “family” to describe their campus culture, we at Appalachian truly feel we are a family that cares deeply about one another. As members of the Appalachian Family, we recognize the Appalachian Experience is not for a day, or an hour, or a college term only – but for life.

For 20 years the Appalachian Parents Association has worked with the University Administration to support the student experience here. Appalachian is a destination of choice among the brightest and best high school graduates and is becoming nationally recognized university that combines the best characteristics of a liberal arts education with the opportunities afforded by many research institutions.

H1N1 Update H1N1 Update

We continue to see many cases of the influenza A, subtype H1N1 virus (formerly called the swine flu). Thankfully, the virus causes a relatively mild illness for most people. However, we remain vigilant for complications, especially in those students who have underlying medical conditions. Professors are working with those students who have to miss classes due to the flu. It is not clear when this epidemic will peak. In our experience, there have been increasing numbers every week. We remain hopeful that the nature of the illness will remain the same and that there will be no increase in the rate of complications.

We continue to follow the guidelines established by the Center for Disease Control regarding treatment and isolation. The H1N1 vaccine is on the horizon- perhaps late October or early November. More information can be found at www.emergency.appstate.edu.

Move-in Day 2009 Move-In 2009 - Wow, what a day!

On Friday, August 21st 1200+ Appalachian State University students, staff, and faculty as well as members of the High Country welcomed; directed traffic; and carried and carried and carried boxes, televisions, clothes, more boxes, carpets, and some things that could not be identified. Items went up the steps/elevators and items sometimes came back down the same way when it was found that they did not fit or they were not needed. It was a beautiful day filled with excitement, smiles, and a few tears.

Many, many thanks to Julie LaSalle, who coordinated the campus and community volunteers;
Barbara and Dale Austin, who coordinated the parent volunteers; ROTC; ASU Staff Council; ASU Parents Association; Campus Ministers; Parking and Traffic; Residence Life; and everyone who contributed their time and energy! The Class of 2013 surely received a warm Appalachian welcome!

Convocation Nobel Peace Prize nominee speaks at Convocation

Record numbers of students, faculty, staff and community members gathered at the Holmes Convocation Center on Thursday, September 10 to hear New York Times best-selling author and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Greg Mortenson.

Calling all Students: This year we have professional recruiters from 6 different companies volunteering their time to conduct mock interviews with you. This is a really great opportunity to be interviewed by a professional recruiter while not “under the gun”; a chance to practice your interviewing skills in a professional setting, receive feedback from top recruiters, network and get set for the real thing--on campus interviews.

This semester we are delighted to have recruiters from Kraft Foods Company, Maxim Health Care, EMMCare, a marketing company, Chandler Concrete, a local business, ECR Software, a local business, and Jackson Sumner & Associates, an excess and specialty lines brokerage firm, also local.

This is a First Come First Serve opportunity. Once the mock interview slots are filled, the opportunity will have passed. So, don’t miss out! Students can sign up for a mock interview via their Career Gear Account. Interviews begin on Monday, September 14.

For additional information, visit the Career Development Center or call us at 828-262-2180.

Board Member Spotlight

Dale and Barbara Green Austin, Co-Vice Presidents, Board of Directors

Dale and Barbara Green AustiDale and Barbara currently serve as the Vice Presidents for the Board of Directors of the Parents Association. They have a son Christopher who is a junior, in the College of Business, majoring in Health Care Management. They joined the Parents Association primarily because Barbara is an Alumnus and saw the association as an opportunity to become more involved and as a way to give back to ASU. “We love ASU for many reasons, but mainly for the care and support that is shown to our students by the University faculty and staff....Chancellor Peacock topping the list!”

Student Spotlight

Michael Stephen McSwain, President of the Appalachian Student Ambassadors, Senior, Banking & Finance

Michael Stephen McSwainMichael is a senior here at Appalachian State University and grew up in Shelby, NC. He is majoring in Finance & Banking with a minor in International Business. He will graduate in May 2010.

“My senior year of high school I attended Fall Open House and fell in love with the beautiful campus and with the community Appalachian provided me, even as a prospective student!  Some of Appalachian's strong programs also played a role in my decision to attend. The people on Appalachian's campus are truly its strongest assets. I love to see our Chancellor on the field cheering on our football team, our vice chancellors working in classrooms with students, our faculty and staff bending over backwards for the student body, and seeing my peers passionate about receiving an education. Also, the opportunities are endless at Appalachian. I was fortunate to be able to spend the summer working in China after completion of the three-week Holland Fellows Business Study in Asia program through the Walker College of Business.  Appalachian has given me the chance to do things I never thought possible"!

"I am currently serving as the President of the Appalachian Student Ambassadors. This organization has allowed me to grow personally and professionally throughout my college experience. I have had many opportunities to work with administration and alumni as an official university representative. I have been given opportunities to travel to National and District Ambassador conferences all over the United States.  But most importantly, I have been blessed to have the opportunity to affect the future of Appalachian by sharing with prospective students, on campus tours, how it truly is great to be a mountaineer".
