What is the Parents' Association?

We have had the privilege to lead your Appalachian State Parents Association. While we have 38 board members, all parents are members of this Association.

We thought all of you should know or should be reminded of what this Association does representing you and our University.

Our first assignment each year is to assist with Orientation for the incoming freshman class. We are available to provide a parent’s perspective of needs, concerns, and information during these 2-day sessions.

The next assignment, which is the largest and most important project every year, is “Move In” Day for the incoming freshman class. We coordinate the day for 2700+ incoming students and their parents to make it as pleasant an experience as possible. This is always an emotional day and our goal is to make it a positive experience. The Vice Presidents of our Association are in charge of this project every year and Barbara and Dale Austin did an awesome job this year!

Another large project each year is allocating our funds to worthy Student/University projects. Various Student and University groups submit written proposals requesting funds to make our University a better place. We receive 60-70 requests each year for funding. Some of the projects funded this past year include:

  • Career Development Center for Student Interviewing Stations
  • ACT – Student Programs for First Aid Kits for Alternative Spring Break
  • Housing and Residence Life for Wheeled Dollies for Move In
  • Equity, Diversity & Compliance for a Diversity Celebration
  • Living Learning Center for an Edible Schoolyard

We also provide counsel in times of need or bereavement to parents. The University also has many gatherings around the southeast to provide information to prospective students and their parents and we ask current parents to attend and answer questions.

As ambassadors for Appalachian State, we carry the flag from a parent’s perspective to make an already excellent University better as well as assist in attracting future students and parents.
