COMMENTS FROM THE CHAIR:

This will be the last newsletter article I will be writing as the Chair of District #3.  At our Annual Meeting in July, Dr. Pat Reighard was elected to Chair our District for 2000-2001.  Pat will begin his duties as Chair on October 1, 2000.  We congratulate Pat and  know he will do a superb job for SEANC and this District.  I want to take this opportunity to thank all the officers for being  so cooperative and supportive and for helping to make this a very productive year.  Teresa Johnson as the Secretary and Teresa Canton as our Treasurer have been invaluable to me and this District. Libby Clawson, Pat Taylor and Teresa Canton have made great strides in our Communications area.  They created a website, published an excellent Newsletter and they handled all the news releases.  In addition, they kept a Scrapbook for our District that has been entered in the State-wide competition for District of the Year Award.  This award will be presented at the State Convention in September.  I have been fortunate to be able to work with such a dedicated, hard
working group of people.  There are too many areas to name one by one, but in this newsletter you will see a list of officers and delegates.  Everyone has contributed to make this District one of the best in the State.  On the State-wide level, SEANC has made many accomplishments this year.   We have created a slogan that has taken us through the short session of the General Assembly.  “KEEPING WATCH AND TAKING ACTION”.  That is exactly what our Legislative staff and our Executive Director did.  They worked countless hours in the Legislature going to bat for our salary increase, health benefits and retirement issues.  I am more convinced now than ever, that SEANC made the difference in us receiving an increase of 4.2%. Otherwise it would have been 3% as Governor Hunt had  proposed in the budget back in October of 1999.

I just want to encourage you to invite others to join this Association.  The membership dues of $48 is a small price to pay for the benefits we receive.  SEANC member benefits include:  Full-time lobbyist in the General Assembly; Our spokesman before the State Personnel commission, Retirement System Board of Trustees, State Health Plan Board
and other non-legislative bodies; Group Term Life Insurance; $1,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance included in your dues; Discount Buying Opportunities/Vision Program/Mail Order Pharmacy; Scholarships; The State Employee Reporter, the Association’s Newspaper.  These are just a few of the benefits to being a member of SEANC.  You can contact Bob Hite, membership chairman or Lois Forrester, Chair of District #3 and we will be happy to talk with you about joining this great Association.

One last thing I want to mention, please mark your calendars now for the Rally in Raleigh on Wednesday, May 16, 2001.  Last year over 5800 State workers from all over North Carolina came together in Raleigh to let the Legislators know that we can “vote ‘em in or vote ‘em out”.  Make plans now to join us and let’s have 10,000 state workers down in Raleigh in 2001.

It is the right of every American citizen to vote for the candidate of their choice that will represent them all the way from the local offices to the President of the United States.  Please get out and exercise your right.  SEANC is sponsoring a Voter Registration Drive on Friday, September 29, 2000, at all the State Employees Credit Unions in North Carolina.  If you have had a name change, address change or if you want to change your party affiliation, this will be your opportunity to have a convenient location to fill out the necessary paperwork.

TEDDY BEAR PROJECT
SEANC will show its support for the NC State Highway Patrol teddy bear program again this year by donating teddy bears at the State Convention.  Last year hundreds of teddy bears were collected for this worthy project.  If you would like to participate, get a  small, new teddy bear to one of the 1999-2000 officers or delegates before September 7.
