ASU HEAD COACH JERRY MOORE
Coach Moore (Baylor, 1961) -- In his eighth season as head coach
of the Mountaineers..has compiled a 62-33-0 mark at the school...
15th season as Division I head coach, having served two seasons at
North Texas, and five at Texas Tech...has compiled an 89-81-2
overall mark as college head coach...posted an 11-11-0 record at
North Texas (1979-80), and a 16-37-2 mark at Texas Tech (1981-
85)...came to Appalachian after one season as receivers coach and
recruiting coordinator at Arkansas...veteran of 29 seasons of college
coaching, and has 33 years of coaching experience...native of Bonham,
Texas...ranked among the top eight receivers in the nation in his
sophomore and senior seasons at Baylor...had 65 catches for 758 yards
for his career...captained the 1960 Baylor squad that played in the Gator
Bowl and finished as the nation's 11th ranked team...began his coaching
career at Corsicana (Texas) High School (1961-64)...held assistant
coaching posts at Southern Methodist (1965-72), Nebraska (1973-78),
and Arkansas (1988)...has guided Appalachian to a pair of Southern
Conference grid titles (1991, 1995), and four second-place league
finishes (1989, 1990, 1992, 1994)...has led the Mountaineers into the
NCAA I-AA playoffs five years (1989, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995)...named
Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1991, 1994 and 1995...AFCA
Region Coach-of-the-Year in 1994 and 1995...ranks as the
winningest head coach in Appalachian football history with 62
victories...is 7-1 against Virginia Military...

Rob Best...Offensive Coordinator...Quarterbacks
(Texas Tech, 1971) -- in his nineth season on the Appalachian
coaching staff, serving as offensive coordinator and also handling
the quarterbacks. The 1996 campaign marks his 15th year as a
member of Jerry Moore's Staff.
A Dallas, Texas native, Best joined the Mountaineers in 1989,
following five seasons on the Texas Tech staff. Best coached the Red
Raider offensive backs for two seasons, and handled the offensive line for
three years.
David Knaus...Defensive Coordinator...Linebackers (Texas Tech, 1975) -- in
his fifth season on the Mountaineer football staff, and is in his second
stint as a member of Jerry Moore's staff at Appalachian. Knaus served
as the Mountaineer defensive coordinator for 4 years then left to
become an assistant coach at Southern Methodist for 4 seasons. He then
returned to Appalachian in 1997.
Stacy Searles...Offensive Line (Auburn, 1990) -- in his fourth season on
the Mountaineer football staff, and handles the offensive line.
Searels came to ASU after serving as assistant offensive line and
special teams coach at Auburn. A first-team All-America selection with the
Tigers in 1987, Searels was named the Lineman of the Year by the Atlanta
Touchdown Club in 1987, and was an All-Southeastern Conference choice on
the line in both his junior and senior seasons. In addition, he earned
All-South honors in his final year. A native of Trion, Georgia, Searels
played two season with the San Diego Chargers, one year with the Miami
Dolphins and spent one season with the New York/New Jersey Knights.
Dale Jones...Defensive Line (Tennessee, 1988) -- begins his second season on the
Appalachian football staff. Jones will handle the Mountaineer
defensive line.
Jones joined Jerry Moore's staff in the spring of 1996 after five
seasons as defensive coordinator at Georgia Military College. In his last
two seasons there, Georgia Military posted a 20-2 record. Prior to his
tenure at Georgia Military, Jones served on the coaching staff at the
University of Florida. In 1990, Jones served as defensive coordinator of
the Parna Panthers in the Italian Football League, and began his coaching
career in 1989 at the University of Tennessee.
Tim Horton...Running Backs (Arkansas, 1990) -- enters his eighth season as
a member of Jerry Moore's Appalachian coaching staff, and his fourth as
running backs coach. Horton spent his first three years with the
Mountaineers handling the wide receivers.
A graduate of Arkansas, Horton joined the ASU staff after earning
four letters with the Razorbacks at split end. Team captain of the 1989
Arkansas squad, Horton was a second-team All Southwest Conference selection
as a senior, and was twice named to the league all-academic honor squad.
Posting 49 career receptions, Horton played in four bowl games with the
Razorbacks --the Cotton Bowl (1989 and 1990), the Liberty Bowl (1987), and
the Orange Bowl (1987).
John Wiley...Defensive Backs...Recruiting Coordinator (East Texas State, 1984) --
in his seventh season on the Appalachian staff, and is in his second
stint with the Mountaineers. He coaches the defensive backs and also
serves as recruiting coordinator.
Wiley spent the 1989 and 1990 seasons handling the Mountaineer
secondary, then spent the 1991 season at Iowa Wesleyan College, serving as
secondary and special teams coach. In that year, Iowas Wesleyan was ranked
5th in the NAIA and advanced to the national playoffs.
The Texas City, Texas, native came to ASU in 19899 after two
seasons on the football staff at Texas. He worked with the
Longhorn secondary in his two seasons in Austin, and coached in the 1987
Bluebonnet Bowl.
Louis Clyburn...Tight Ends (Duke, 1994) -- is in his third season on the
Mountaineer grid staff. He works with the tight ends. In 1994, he assisted
with the offensive line.
Clyburn joined the Mountaineers after spending the spring of 1995
working with the Camden (S.C.) High School football program. A 1994
graduate of Duke, Clyburn earned four letters with the Blue Devils, and
played in the 1995 Hall of Fame Bowl. Named to the 1994 Atlantic Coast
Conference Honor Roll.
Mark DeBastiani...Defensive Tackles (Shepherd, 1993) -- enters his third
season on the Appalachian football staff. He works with the defensive
tackles.
DeBastiani joined Jerry Moore's staff after spending three
seasons on the coaching staff at Shepherd (W.Va.) College. He coached the
defensive line for two seasons, and the offensive line for one year.
A native of Arthurdale, West Virginia, DeBastiani was a two-year
starter and earned three letters at Shepherd at center, and played on
back-to-back West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
championship squads in 1991 and 1992.
