Summer Ventures

in Science and Mathematics

  Admissions

The North Carolina General Assembly enacted legislation in 1984 which created Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics.  SVSM was conceived as a cost-free enrichment program for academically motivated high school students potentially interested in a career in science or mathematics.  SVSM provides participants resident experiences on university campuses during the summer.  The Summer Ventures program was placed under the administration of NC General Administration with coordinating and supervisory roles delegated to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham.  Six campuses host the Summer Ventures Program with each site having its own director.

Appalachian State University is one of the sixteen constituent institutions of the statewide University of North Carolina system. This campus has been the site of Summer Ventures institutes since the inception of the program.

ASU is located in Boone, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, close to the borders of Virginia and Tennessee. The campus covers about 250 acres; the architecture ranges from rustic to modern. The pleasantly warm days and cool evenings make this region one of North Carolina's favorite vacation spots. Nearby tourist attractions include Grandfather Mountain, the Blue Ridge parkway, Blowing Rock, Linville Gorge and many vacation resorts.

  The Calendar

The 2005 ASU Summer Ventures program will run from July 3 through July 30. The weekend of July 15-17 has been designated as a "break" weekend, during which students can return home. The final day of the program will include activities to which the student's families will be invited.

The Academic Program

The ASU curriculum is designed to give you a powerful enrichment experience in science and mathematics. You will actively pursue an independent project and write a research paper, which you will present at the end of the program. Your professors will work closely with you on your project and will guide you in the preparation of your paper.
