| On
April 27,1991, 81 women came together to create the Theta Nu Chapter
of Alpha Phi at Appalachian State University. They raised and donated
$10,000 to the Watauga Cardiac Care Unit to start the chapter here
in Boone, North Carolina.
|
| Appalachian
is not the only school in North Carolina to have Alpha Phi! Duke
University, East Carolina University, and UNC Wilmington also have
Alpha Phi Chapters! |
| Alpha
Phi joined Alpha Delta Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Zeta, Kappa Delta, Phi
Mu, and Sigma Kappa, to become the seventh Panhellenic sorority
on Appalachian's campus. |
| As of
Fall 2002, Cone Hall is the Greek dorm! We believe this is a positive
step toward Greek unity. Because sororities cannot have houses,
each sorority has her own floor and can decorate it according to
their taste. With all the sororities living under one roof, it is
a great way to meet the ladies from other sororities! Hi to all
of our neighbors! |

Why
is Alpha Phi pronounced "fee" instead of "fi"?
| When
the Greek letter "Phi" is preceeded by a vowel and not
followed by another letter, it is pronounced "fee". |
Why
do you call yourself a fraternity? Isn't that what guys join?
| Alpha
Phi International Fraternity was founded before the word "sorority"
was coined. We classify ourselves as a sorority, but officially
we are a fraternity. |
Why
are faces erased from some pictures?
| The
faces are erased from pictures because these girls are Rho Gammas. |
Well,
what are Rho Gammas?
| Rho
Gammas, or "Recruitment Guides", are sorority women who
assist in the recruitment process. They cannot wear letters, function
shirts, or do anything that would associate them with a particular
sorority. They are unbiased mentors to the women who are participating
in recruitment, and in order to be unbiased, they disaffiliate with
their sorority until recruitment is over. They give advice on the
recruitment process, bid cards, etc. |
OH!
You mean a Rho Chi!
| Technically
yes. However the name "Rho Chi" has been replaced with
"Rho Gamma". The Greek letters PX resemble the abbreviation
for "prescription" too closely, so it was changed to Rho
Gamma so there would be no confusion. |
Where
can I find information about Recruitment?
I
thought Formal Recruitment was in the Fall.
| As of
Fall 2002, Appalachian State now has Deferred Recruitment, which
pushes Formal Recruitment back to the Spring semester. |
What
do you do during the Fall then?
| During
the Fall, sororities host Informal Recruitment for women with 15
semester hours or more. For more information about Informal Recruitment,
contact Ashley Cobb,
Director of MAP/COB. |
How
many members can a sorority have?
| The
maximum number of members a sorority can have on Appalachian's campus
is 80. |
How
do they decide how big a new member class is?
| The
number of women who attend the final round of recruitment, (the
Preference Party) is divided by seven (the number of Panhellenic
sororities on campus). For example, if 700 women went through Preference,
a new member class could be up to 100. |
What's
with all the ivy?
| The
ivy leaf is our unofficial mascot. |
