Click Here for 2008 Application Form

The Washington at Work Course is designed to combine an academic view of the actors and institutions of our nation’s capitol with a hands-on exploration of Washington, DC. The course is 3 credits and incorporates both classroom teaching and a week in Washington, DC. Requirements for the course include classroom instruction, required readings, an examination, and a research paper. The Washington at Work course is typically offered during the two weeks between Spring Graduation and the start of Summer School Session I. The course schedule involves 5 evenings of classroom instruction at ASU and 6 days in Washington, DC.

While in Washington, DC we meet with numerous political actors and visit the governmental structures of our nation’s capitol. Over the last few summers we have met individually with members of the NC delegation of the U.S House of Representative and U.S. Senate, toured the U.S. Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Arlington Cemetary, and Holocaust Museum, and met with stafff of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the Japanese and Mexican Embassies, and several lobbying organizations. The purpose of our meetings is to integrate these conversations and experiences with your academic coursework and readings.

Washington at Work students are required to enroll in PS 3535 or PS 5535 and pay normal tuition fees for a 3 credit course plus a $350 additional fee for travel and housing in Washington, DC. Students are also responsible for their own meals each day and for travel within the city not directly related to the course. Enrollment in the Washington at Work Course is limited to only 13 students. While we prefer applicants from the Department of Political Science, any student with an interest in a career related to government will be considered for enrollment. Preference is also given to those students with grade point averages of 3.0 or higher.

For additional information regarding this course, please contact Dr. Phillip Ardoin or Dr. Adam Newmark.
