POLAND INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Beginning in the summer of 1997, the Department of Communication at Appalachian State University instituted an internship program in Warsaw, Poland, in cooperation with the Warsaw College of Communication and Media.  The program is coordinated by Dr. Frank A. Aycock, Professor.

The internship program is a five-week program which allows students the unique opportunity to combine a cultural experience with a work experience.  Students work in Polish media outlets that allow students to use their knowledge from university courses in a day-to-day work setting.  The language of work for students is English!  Students work 24-25 hours a week at the Polish media outlet and receive three credit hours.  Students in the concentrations of Advertising, Journalism, Organizational/Public, and Public Relations can apply for internship opportunities in Warsaw.

In addition, students enjoy the unique experience of actually living in a foreign environment, requiring them to deal with the local population on a day-to-day basis.

This is the magnificent Cloth Hall in the center of the Old Town Square of Krakow.  Throughout its history, the Cloth Hall was used by the various guilds of the city to sell their wares.

Today, the Cloth Hall stands as one of the best-known tourist sites of Krakow.  Stalls are available for the local merchants to sell everything from amber to crystal to wood carvings to other souvenirs at very reasonable prices!

Warsaw - Capital of Poland and its largest city.  Warsaw is a city reborn from the ruins of WWII (98% destroyed).  The image you see is the castle square leading into the restored Old Town.

A vibrant city of approximately 2,000,000, Warsaw is also the economic center of the country.  It is here that the Appalachian student interns work for five weeks each summer.
