In Charles A. Hill's "Reading the Visual in College Writing Classes," he discusses the significance of proximity between textual elements. For the title of the page, I chose a font that spaced the characters in such a fashion that they were both large and readable. Hill's focus is on proximity between words, but my choice here offers proximity between letters. Moreover, the red space represented here separates the page from the black menu space below, providing a proximity to offset the title. Thus, readability and ease of navigation are both increased. M. Osborne's "Rhetorical Depiction" delves into the rhetoric of visual design. To provide an understanding for what "depiction" consists, Osborne breaks the term down into five functions: presentation, intensification, facilitation, application, and reaffirmation. A black and white image of Edgar Allan Poe appeals to all five of these tenets. While the image does provide a visual of Poe, it also intensifies the power of his words and the analysis on the site, facilitations information exchange by providing a visual to accompany the text, and application by allowing audience members to make connections with the interplay between words, Poe's rhetoric, and images, both on this site and in Poe's writing.
