Celebrate Brain Awareness Week!

Here are some reminders how you can maintain your brain fitness. Don't forget to pass these tips on to your patients!

1. Wear your seat belt. MVA's are the most common cause of brain injury.

2. Wear your helmet. Head injury is the most common cause of death in bicycle crashes.

3. Avoid illegal drugs. Drugs alter brain function.

4. Be aware of risks involved with sports. Some of Boone's favorite pastimes-- skiing, horseback riding, and soccer--involve risk of head injury.

5. Be careful when diving. Dive only in designated diving areas where the water depth is known.

6. Look both ways! Pedestrian accidents may also result in head injury.

7. Check out that playground! Soft, impact-absorbing surfaces will help reduce risk of head injuries on the playground.

8. Eat right! A low fat diet may help reduce risk of stroke.

9. Exercise! (Safely, of course) Regular exercise may also reduce risk of stroke.

10. Dispose of chemicals properly! Some chemicals are neurotoxic--they can hurt your nerves and your brain.

These tips are brought to you by the Speech Language Pathology Department.
