Course Description

The philosophy and implementation of procedures for the evaluation of communication disorders in children and adults with emphasis on obtaining and interpreting case history data, conducting diagnostic interviews, and administering, scoring and interpreting data from diagnostic instruments used to evaluate articulation/phonology, language, fluency, voice and motor speech disorders. Issues related to the assessment of communication disorders in diverse populations will be highlighted.

Course Format

This course will be in seminar format. Each participant will contribute to the learning of the other participants through presentations, thoughtful discussions, and group activities. We will try to devote the greatest proportion of each class meeting to discussion and/or learning activities, with a limited amount of "lecture."

Course Requirements

Case Studies

In small groups, students will complete 4 case studies. Each case study will include several components, including review of case history information, assessment planning, role-plays, interpretation of findings, and report-writing. Each case will be worth up to100 points based on instructor and group evaluation.

Presentations

In small groups, students will be responsible for presenting information on a specific assessment tool. Details on this requirement are included on the Assignment page. The presentation will be worth up to 100 points.

Instrument Review

Students will be responsible for reviewing the characteristics of several standardized assessment instruments. Details on this requirement are included on the Assignment page. The reviews will be worth up to a total of 100 points.

Assessment Competencies

Students will demonstrate competence in administering and scoring several commonly used assessment tools. Details on this requirement are included on the Assignment page. The competencies will be worth up to a total of 100 points.
