Joint Case Discussions

During the Fall 1999 session, we will conduct electronic case discussions in which we will identify the issues surrounding speech, language, swallowing, and activities of daily living (ADL's) in individuals with neurological disorders. Below please find the descriptions and assignments for planned discussion participants.

ID of likely communication limitations: Based on the historical information provided, identify the communication difficulties the patient is most likely to exhibit.

ID of likely swallowing limitations: Based on the historical information provided, identify the swallowing difficulties the patient is most likely to exhibit.

ID of likely limitations in basic ADL's: Based on the historical information provided, identify the difficulties with basic ADL's (dressing, bething, grooming, feeding, toileting) the patient is most likely to exhibit.

ID of likely limitations in complex ADL's: Based on the historical information provided, identify the difficulties with complex ADL's (driving, meal preparation, balancing a checkbook) the patient is most likely to exhibit.

Assessment of swallowing: Identify the swallowing assessment tools that would be most effective in assessing the impairments. Describe specific findings the given tool(s) would provide.

Assessment of communication: Identify the communication tools that would be most effective in assessing the impairments. Describe specific findings the given tool(s) would provide.

Assessment of basic ADL's: Identify the tools that would be most effective in assessing limitations in basic ADL's.  Describe the specific findings the given tool(s) would provide.

Assessment of complex ADL's: Identify the tools that would be most effective in assessing limitations in complex ADL's.  Describe the specific findings the given tool(s) would provide.

Prognosis: Based on the historical information and descriptions of deficits, develop a prognosis for recovery. Provide preliminary recommendations regarding most likely arena for service provision (acute, rehab, nursing home, etc.) as well as the likely duration of treatment.

Swallowing targets and activities: List at least two functional goals and list those treatment activities (including compensatory strategies and therapeutic techniques) which would be utilized.

Basic ADL targets and activities: List at least two functional goals and list those treatment activities (including compensatory strategies and therapeutic techniques) which would be utilized.

Complex ADL targets and activities: List at least two functional goals and list those treatment activities (including compensatory strategies and therapeutic techniques) which would be utilized.

Communication targets and activities: List at least two functional goals and list those treatment activities (including compensatory strategies and therapeutic techniques) which would be utilized.

Review and question: Identify any issues or questions raised by the previous responses (Why a certain target? Did you consider...? etc)

Summarize: Provide a brief summary of the case, highlighting the most pertinent issues for speech, communication, and ADL's
