The following questions will require you to integrate information from class lectures and activities, the text, and other appropriate sources. When appropriate, please cite any references you use.
 

1. You have been assigned to provide therapy for a 17 year old male 3 months s/p MVA with resultant TBI. He has a history of ETOH and drug use and is a high school drop-out. He exhibits deficits in the areas of auditory comprehension, short term memory, higher-level processing including problem solving. He also exhibits a flat affect and has a poor attendance record for therapy. Develop a prognosis for this client and discuss the factors you considered in developing the prognosis. Describe at least three therapy goals you would set and the activities you might use to target those goals.

2. For each of the following scenarios, describe who/what agency is most likely to be responsible for paying for speech language services. Discuss what factors related to reimbursement will affect your therapy planning and documentation.

  1. 14 year old with family income below poverty level
  2. 29 year old returning to work but at a different position
  3. 56 year old who is 6 years post onset and has not received therapy in 5 years
  4. 78 year old 2 days post onset CVA
  5. 82 year old with dementia recently admitted to a nursing home

3. We provide speech language services to individuals with aphasia, right hemisphere deficits, TBI, and dementia. Compare and contrast goals and therapy activities across these diagnostic categories.
