This elective will address issues related to the management of communication and swallowing disorders in the medical setting, particularly those disorders which are not discussed in detail as part of the standard curriculum. Specifically, this course will address the management of speech and swallowing disorders in patients with tracheostomy and methods of speech restoration for patients with laryngectomy. Issues specific to practice in medical settings, including medical terminology and abbreviations, managed care concepts, and documentation will also be addressed. Course Objectives 1. Students will become familiar with standard medical roots and affixes as well as abbreviations used in medical records. 2. Students will gain an understanding of basic concepts of managed care. 3. Students will gain foundational knowledge and basic skills necessary for the assessment and treatment of speech and swallowing disorders associated with tracheostomy. 4. Students will gain foundational knowledge and develop
basic skills for the assessment and management of speech restoration following
total laryngectomy.

Medical Terminology. Students will be expected to complete self-study of medical terms and abbreviations posted on the class web page. A single quiz will be administered March 12th. The score on this quiz will account for 25% of the final grade. Managed Care. Students will develop a one page summary of the implications of managed care on speech language pathology services in medical settings. This summary may take a variety of forms and focus on various aspects of managed care. It is recommended that the summaries be developed collaboratively by groups of students so that each student may ultimately have a "complete guide." The summary will account for 25% of the final grade. Tracheostomies. Each student will develop a "cheat sheet" summarizing concepts related to the assessment and treatment of speech and swallowing disorders associated with tracheostomy. It is recommended that the final product be a single page, front and back, formatted to be easily used as a guide at bedside. The cheat sheet will account for 25% of the final grade. Laryngectomy. Each student will demonstrate competence in producing alaryngeal speech with an electrolarynx. Competence will be demonstrated via completion of the Assessment of Intelligibility of Dysarthric Speech. Percent intelligibility (as measured by off-line transcription by a class participant) will account for 25% of the final grade. |
