Course Description

A seminar emphasizing collaborative search and construction of meaning, focusing on communication and swallowing impairments affecting children with a variety of developmental or acquired disorders. Specifically, the following topics will be addressed:

Course Objectives

  1. To provide participants with foundational knowledge of relevant disorders and their effect on communication and swallowing.
  2. To develop resource materials for the assessment and management of speech and swallowing disorders in infants and children.
  3. To integrate concepts of multicultural awareness, family counseling, and client advocacy with delivery of services.
  4. To increase participants’ ability to critically review research and clinical documents.
  5. To develop independent and collaborative learning strategies.

Course Requirements

All participants will be expected to prepare for and actively contribute to all seminar meetings. Each participant will lead one group discussion. Each participant will develop an individualized final product that will be presented to the seminar participants for review.

The final grade will be based on self and peer review of seminar participation, presentation, and the final product.

Text and Readings

The following books are in the bookstore, but additional readings will be identified during the course.
