Course Description

This course will discuss the speech and swallowing disorders that are commonly associated with various childhood conditions, including cleft palate and other craniofacial anomalies, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, and developmental apraxia of speech.

Course Format

This course will be in seminar format. Each participant will contribute to the learning of the other participants through presentations, thoughtful discussions, and group activities. We will try to devote the greatest proportion of each class meeting to discussion and/or learning activities, with a limited amount of "lecture."

Course Requirements

Individuals enrolled in CD 5531 will have slightly different requirements than those taking the course for undergraduate credit (CD 3531).

1. Class Participation.  In a seminar experience, it is critical for all members to participate and contribute to the learning of others.  At midterm and at the end of the course, students will receive a participation grade based on ratings by the instructor and fellow students.  These scores will constitute 15% of the final grade.

2. Demonstration of Learning.  Seminar participants will choose to complete two of the following options to demonstrate learning. Students enrolled in CD 3531 will be required to complete one of the following options. Additional options may be proposed throughout the semester.

  • Portfolio
    • Individual or groups of students will determine the purpose, scope , and nature of their portfolios.
    • Near the end of the course, the portfolios will be presented to the entire class.
  • Presentations
    • Individual or groups of students may present information related to a course topic.
    • Presentations may include lecture, demonstration, or other activities
    • Presentations should be at least 60-90 minutes in length, but may be longer, depending on the topic
  • Discussion leadership
    • Individual or groups of students may lead a class discussion related to a course topic
    • Discussion leaders will be responsible for selecting the readings prior to the discussion date
    • Discussion leaders will facilitate the discussion of the readings and plan activities to complement the readings
  • Clinical observations
    • Students may observe clinical services provided to children with organic speech/swallowing disorders
    • Students will present to the class a summary of the observation, including reflections (this may take written or discussion format)
  • Written topic analysis
    • Students may choose to explore in-depth a particular course topic
    • Students will analyze and synthesize the information they obtain in essay or research paper format
    • Students may select 2-3 other seminar participants to review their analysis, provide feedback, and ask for clarification

Grading System

Each course requirement will be graded as satisfactory/unsatisfactory. Students will be required to resubmit unsatisfactory work or complete additional learning activities for a minimum of two satisfactory learning activities.

A: Two satisfactory learning activities plus excellent participation ratings

A-:Two satisfactory learning activities plus satisfactory participation ratings

B: Two satisfactory learning activities plus unsatisfactory participation ratings
