Boone and The Surrounding Area
Located in the heart of the southern Appalachian Mountains, Appalachian
State University is less than two hours from the regions airports and
population centers. The town of Boone has a resident poipulation of
15,000 citizens
and sits at an elevation of 1,000 meters. A large part of the
University's
enticement is a location enhanced by beautiful mountain scenery and
opportunities
for year-round outdoor recreation. The University is close to the
Appalachian
Trail (which runs from Maine to Georgia), the Pisgah National Forest,
Cherokee
National Forest, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the Blue
Ridge
Parkway. There are four major ski resorts within a few minutes' driving
distance
from Boone. Four distinct seasons provide a scenic variety that ranges
from
picturesque snowfalls in the winter, colorful wildflowers and rushing
mountain
streams in spring, cool (average temperature 70 degrees F), sunny days
in
summer, and the clear, crisp color-splashed days of autumn.
