Course Information:

Calculus With Analytic Geometry II is the second course in a three-course sequence for students majoring in one of the mathematical or physical sciences.  A thorough background in differentiation, an introduction to integration, and all other topics that are covered in Calculus With Analytic Geometry I (MAT 1110) at Appalachian State will be assumed.  Completion of MAT 1110 or the equivalent with a grade of C– or better is a prerequisite.

Homework:  At the end of every lecture meeting of this class, some homework exercises will be assigned.  Solutions to these exercises will never be graded, although they will be collected and reviewed when a quiz is given over the same section.  If you are ever absent from a meeting of this class, you will find the homework that was assigned that day posted on my web page (http://www.appstate.edu/~klimare) shortly after the class meeting ends.

Quizzes:  Full-period quizzes will be given about every fourth meeting of this class, and will include some quizzes that you must take alone as well as some quizzes that you will be able to work on together with your classmates.  Quizzes will usually be announced one class meeting before they are given, although I may also give some pop quizzes if I feel like they would be useful.  For quizzes you will usually not be allowed to refer to the course text or your class notes, but all quiz problems will always come directly from the homework that has been assigned previously, and during all quizzes you will always be allowed to refer to any homework that you have done previously.  Make-up quizzes will never be given for any reason.  I will drop your lowest quiz grade so that you will not be penalized for a quiz that you miss due to unexpected circumstances.  If you are ever absent from class for any reason on a day when a quiz is announced, you will still be responsible for taking the quiz with the rest of your class.  So you should check my web page (http://www.appstate.edu/~klimare) every time you are absent to see if a quiz was announced, and make plans to stop by my office sometime before the quiz is given if you need any help on the material that was covered during the class meeting.

Tests:  Tests will be given during our regular class meetings on February 14 (Thursday), March 19 (Wednesday), and April 21 (Monday).  Each of these tests will cover only the course material that was presented since the previous test (or since the start of the semester for the first test), and at least 80% of all test problems will come directly from the homework that has been assigned previously in this class.  If you are ever unexpectedly absent from class for any reason on a day when a test is given, you may take a make-up test in my office at any time during my office hours within one week after your absence, as long as you bring to me in my office a legitimate documented excuse for your absence.  I will make the final decision on all absences as to whether or not they are legitimate.

Final Exam:  A final exam will be given on May 6 (Tuesday) from 12:00 2:30 PM in our usual classroom.  This exam will be comprehensive, covering all material that was presented in the course (including a small amount of new material that will be presented after the third test), and at least 80% of all final exam problems will come directly from the homework that has been assigned previously in this class.

Tardiness/Cell Phone Policy:  If you are more than 10 minutes late to any meeting of this class for any reason, or if your cell phone makes any audible noise during any meeting of this class, you will be assigned a grade of 0 on the next quiz given in the class unless you agree to bring snack food (cookies, brownies, candy, chips, doughnuts, etc.) enough for all of your classmates to the next meeting of the class.

Attitude Policy:  For each time that you display a disrespectful or disruptive attitude about this class at any time during any of our class meetings, I will reduce your final course average by an undisclosed amount before assigning your final letter grade.  No exceptions.  (But please note that you can disagree with me without displaying a disrespectful or disruptive attitude as much as you want.  Respectful disagreements will not be penalized.)

Academic Integrity Policy:  All students must abide by the ASU Academic Integrity Code posted at http://www.academicaffairs.appstate.edu/resources/integrity/code.html.

Grading Policy:

Quizzes:  26% of final average

Tests:  52% of final average

Final Exam:  22% of final average

Final letter grades will then be assigned according to the following scale:

90.00–92.49% = A–

87.50–89.99% = B+

82.50–87.49% = B
