Course Text:  Elementary Linear Algebra, Fifth Edition, by Larson, Edwards, and Falvo

Scientific calculator with matrix capabilities

Course Information:

This course is intended to be an introductory study of the concepts, techniques, and applications of linear algebra, including systems of linear equations, matrices, determinants, vector spaces, linear transformations, and eigenvalues.  A thorough background in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and all other precalculus topics will be assumed, as well as a basic understanding of calculus.  Completion of a full year of calculus (through MAT 1120 at ASU) is listed as a prerequisite in the ASU undergraduate bulletin.  Let me know during the first week of class if you fail to meet this prerequisite.

Homework:  At the end of most of our class meetings, a collection of homework exercises will be assigned from the course text.  Solutions to these exercises will never be collected or graded, however at least 80% of the problems on each quiz, test, and the final exam in this class will come directly from the homework exercises that have been assigned.  If you are ever absent from any of our class meetings, you will find the homework exercises that were assigned that day given on the calendar for this course posted on my web page shortly after the class meeting ends.

Quizzes:  Quizzes of varying lengths will be given at various times during some of our class meetings, and will almost always be unannounced.  If you are ever absent from class for any reason, you will still be responsible for taking any quiz given over any course material that was presented in your absence at the same time as when it is given to the rest of the class.  So you should check the calendar for this course posted on my web page every time you are absent to find out the homework exercises that were assigned in your absence, and make plans to talk with me in my office or by email or phone immediately if you need any help on the course material that was covered in your absence.  Also, recall at least 80% of the problems on each quiz will come directly from the homework exercises that have been assigned.

Tests:  One-hour tests will be given in class on September 28, October 30, and December 2.  Each of these tests will cover only the course material that was presented since the previous test (or since the start of the semester for the first test), and recall at least 80% of the problems on each test will come directly from the homework exercises that have been assigned.  If you are ever absent from class for any unexpected reason on a day when a test is given, you may take a make-up test in my office at any time during my office hours within one week after your absence, as long as you come to see me in my office and provide me with a legitimate documented excuse for your absence.

Final Exam:  A comprehensive final exam will be given in our normal classroom on Thursday, December 10 from 9:00 11:30 AM.  Recall at least 80% of the problems on this exam will come directly from the homework exercises that have been assigned.

Inclement Weather/Campus Emergency/Class Cancellation Policy:  If any of our class meetings are canceled due to inclement weather or a campus emergency, you will be responsible for any assignments and/or announcements given on the calendar for this course posted on my web page.  Also, if I need to cancel any of our class meetings for any reason, I will announce this on the calendar for this course posted my web page and/or in an email sent from klimare@appstate.edu to your your_username@appstate.edu email address.  If you receive any announcement about this class from any email address other than klimare@appstate.edu, you should not consider it as coming from me, and ignore it.  If you fail to do this, you will be assigned a grade of zero on any quiz that you miss as a result, and you will be responsible for any subsequent assignments and/or announcements given on the calendar for this course posted on my web page.

Disability Services:  ASU is committed to making accommodations for individuals with qualifying disabilities.  Those seeking accommodations must contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS) at http://www.ods.appstate.edu/ or 828-262-3056.  After registering, students will meet with ODS staff to discuss eligibility and accommodations.

Academic Integrity Policy:  This course will follow the provisions of the Academic Integrity Code, which can be found online at http://studentconduct.appstate.edu/.

Grading Policy:

Quizzes:  25% of final course average

Tests:  50% of final course average

Final Exam:  25% of final course average

Final letter grades will then be assigned according to the following scale:
