Duties within position:
-rock & sample preparation (thin section, polished thin section, grain section and acetate peel preparation)
-materials analysis (hardness and optical property analysis)
-scientific collection curation and management(rock, mineral and fossil collection curation, policy development)
-scientific equipment management (policy development, moving and maintenance of equipment ranging from basic petrographic testing equipment to microscopy, computer and X-ray diffraction equipment)
-inventory of departmental assets
-curriculum development and classroom design, museum display design
-safety liason, chemical and hazardous waste management
-motor-fleet maintenance
-local outreach and assistance (grade school demonstrations and lectures as well as museum tours and workshops)....

•Geologic Research and Publications

-Since beginning in my geology education, I have studied tectonics and petrography and petrology of Blue Ridge rocks. I began investigating the geology of Ultramafic Bodies in the Blue Ridge with Loren A. Raymond. Our work on ultramafic bodies led to questions about the terranes that collectively comprise the Blue Ridge. Subsequent work has raised questions about the origins of Devonian plutons and their potential role in an arc. We have also done research on the structure of Grandfather Mountain. Most recently I have become interested in the field of meteoritics (the study of meteorites). Over the past year I have purchased and loaned a collection of specimens that are now on display in the McKinney Geological teaching museum. In addition to self study, I have began learning how to classify meteorites.

rockclimbing

-I have been rock climbing since 1988. I have my brother to thank as my initial influence for this sport. I participate in competitions, climb indoors, boulder and climb traditional and sport climbs. Click for my climbing resume. I have climbed in Alabama, California, Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Scotland, Switzerland, the South of France, Tennesee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia. Some of my favorite climbing areas are near my home in Boone. I have been sponsored by the shoe company, Red Chilis and the gear manufacturer DMM. I hate to admit, but I have had coverage in three climbing videos (Witness This, Frequent Flyers, and Naskarma and several magazines (Boulderdash, Climbing, and Urban Climber).

•rockclimbing advocacy

-Since 2001, I have been invovled with local, state, regional and national climbing advocacy organizations (the BCC, the Carolina Climbers Coalition, the Southeastern Climbers Coalition, and the Access Fund). In 2001, I and many others helped to rejuvenate the adovcacy movement in Boone, NC by reforming the Boone Climbers Coalition (BCC). The BCC is a non-profit advocacy group dedicated to preserving climbing access, promoting responsible use, and preserving our natural resources. I have been the President of the Carolina Climbers Coalition from 2006-2009.

•web design, graphic layout/design, photography/manipulation

-Also in 2001, I started the first climbing website (www.NCBouldering.com)to highlight the resources in and around Boone, NC. The website has grown into a way to carry on my advocacy work by designing and hosting the domain for the Boone Climbers Coalition. It also serves as an advocacy tool by publicizing information for the legally accessible climbing areas in the state of North Carolina and their amenities. Until 2001, this task had not been undertaken to highlight bouldering. Web design lead to graphic design and layout, photo manipulation and personal photography. Some of the software I am familiar with: Adobe Illustrator© and Photoshop©, Macromedia Fireworks©, Flash and Dreamweaver©. I am still learning html, php server apps and plan to learn how to design my own applications....
