Discussion Questions

A waiting room is a liminal space. "Limin" is the latin word for the threshold of a doorway, so a "liminal space" is a space in between two places, like a threshold. How does the liminality of the play's waiting room setting relate to the play's themes? Are there other liminal spaces in the play? Are these effective settings for the action?

Does the character of Douglas (the doctor) change during the play?   If so, how does his change affect the other characters?

What is Wanda's emotional trajectory in the play (i.e. "happy-confused-miserable" or "frightened-angry-accepting")? Does she grow? If so, how?

Did you find the play's ending satisfying? Why or why not? Did it seem consistent with the play's tone and themes?

Some of the characters were more complex than others. Did you find this appropriate or problematic? Why?

How do the various characters view the medical establishment in the play?   How do their views relate to their positions in society?

Did the play affect your perceptions of beauty, body image, or health? If so, how?

Does faith (or lack of it) shape the behavior of any character(s)?   If so, does it help or hurt them?
