Final 1102 World Civilization

Please answer only the three questions indicated; good luck with them.

1. You wrote a short essay for this World Civilization class. Please restate the title of this essay and then give the principal theme and four points through which you elaborated this theme.Finally tell me how you would approach this essay if you could do it over again.

2. Take three of the topics we discussed since the last exam this semester and describe in detail how the study of these topics has changed your mind about them and the world in which you live.

3. Our three outside readings, Magdalena and Balthasar, Into Thin Air and All Quiet on the Western Front, establish very different conceptions of family, adventure and travel, and warfare. First reestablish these themes and, second, take one of these themes and discuss it in detail. (You may either do so on the basis of one or all three books.)

4. We spoke quite a bit about the good and bad qualities of leadership. Please define these qualities and then try to show me through one person how these qualities are represented in that person. (You may take a person from the past, of your paper, in your community, but not your parents.)

5. Think for a time about the intellectual maturation that you have undergone over the last two or three years and then reflect on the maturation of Paul Bäumer and his friends in All Quiet on the Western Front. Now, without over dramatizations, compare and contrast your own intellectual maturation to that of one of the characters you read about. (Do not give yourself more space/time than one of these characters and be sure to set the emotional and physical context of the individuals being discussed.)
