Outreach

Most of my outreach activities are aimed at educational programs and websites.

I'm interested in native plant and butterfly conservation and education and have been serving on the Board of Governors for the Daniel Boone Native Gardens since April 2013. I have been organizing Spring Wildflower Walks through the Biology Department's Nature Preserve since 2013 and started the Boone in Bloom Facebook page in 2014. Since 2015, I have been a member of and involved with the new Blue Ridge Chapter of the North Carolina Native Plant Society. My home garden is certified as a Butterfly Garden and a Monarch Waystation, and I have shared monarch caterpillars with schools and non-profit organizations to raise and tag butterflies for their migration to Mexico.

In addition, I have contributed to educational materials, including the Blue Ridge Parkway's Kids in Parks program, curricular materials for preschool through college level students, several science museums, greenhouses, and the ARKive and Encyclopedia of Life image collections.

At Appalachian State University, I have participated in activities such as the German "Stammtisch" providing students learning German with a chance to practice, and the Upward Bound Career Mentorship Program.
