Department of Mathematical Sciences

Appalachian State University

I am an associate professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Appalachian State University.  I have worked in rural mathematics education and am particularly interested in teacher preparation and access to STEM experiences and learning for rural communities and students.

I am currently the project director of the Appalachian Mathematics Partnership, or AMP, grant, and I am also involved in the NC Quest Appal-ELM project.  I work with the ASU Public School Partnership.

Later this year, I will become the graduate coordinator of the MA - Mathematics Education (Secondary) program here in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.  If you are a teacher, administrator, student, or prospective student interested in getting involved in outreach and scholarship in mathematics education in the beautiful rural areas of North Carolina, email me to talk about opportunities.

What I’m thinking about right now -

I have just stumbled upon Mendeley, which promises to help me organize the many, many pdf files of articles and papers that I have on my computers or in my Dropbox.  I’m also exploring a great deal of technology and how its use can enhance our work in rural educators’ teaching and learning.  Catching up on TED talks lately has reminded me of some great mathematical videos.  Take a look here
