Teacher Algebra Network - an MSP Partnership

The western North Carolina based Teacher Algebra Network is a collaboration of Avery, Alleghany, and Ashe County School Districts and Appalachian State University. The project seeks to introduce participating teachers to Integrated Mathematics and to enhance teachers' abilities to teach algebra to students of varying ability levels and backgrounds.

Current Events and Announcements

The Mathematics and Middle Mathematics Professional Learning Communities of the Appalachian Public School Partnership are hosting Barbara Simpson from Texas Instruments on Tuesday, March 18th. Ms. Simpson will present ideas for using the TI Nspire in class. The session begins at 4:45 at the Broyhill Conference Center in Boone. Renewal credits will be awarded. If you are interested, please feel free to contact Dr. Salinas or Dr. Crocker for more information.

Day One of Professional Development has been completed at each site. Links for hardcopies of materials from those days can be found at "links for resources" on the left. A special thank you goes to our central office folks (John Farrelly, Meg Julian, Nancy Reeves, and Jeff Jaynes) for all their work in setting up these days.

Day Two of Professional Development is currently being scheduled. Check your email or the discussion board for planning of that day for your county.

Drs. Katie Mawhinney and Tracie McLemore Salinas recently participated in a conference in Miami, FL, for project directors of Mathematics-Science Partnerhips grants. The two completed a presentation on professional development models for rural counties and gained insight into the processes for evaluation and reporting. The conference is also expected to provide new ideas for the submission of a proposal to extend the grant project from one to three years. The extension would enable teachers to participate in more than 100 hours of professional development on algebraic reasoning and related topics. If you have specific thoughts on your county's needs for this extension, feel fee to email a project director or to talk to your curriculum representative in your county office.
