Freud Paper Topics

Write a well written and well argued paper on any one of the topics below. Your paper is due by 12:00 noon, Monday, May 3 in my box in the Lobby of IDS. Late papers will be docked one-third of a letter grade for each day late.

Your paper should be typed, double-spaced in a 12 point font with standard margins. It should be a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 pages in length (750 to 1250 words). There should be a cover page including an original and informative title for your paper, your name, this course, my name and the date. There should be a bibliography with complete references for any works cited in the paper. Papers should be stapled in the upper left-hand corner. No binders or folders please. Pages should be numbered. Keep a copy of your paper.

1. Using one of your own dreams, apply the method of dream interpretation that Freud demonstrates in his Irma dream. You can use Freud's essay as a model for your own. First, give some background to the dream, then the dream itself, and then try to interpret as fully as possible the connections and associations each of the elements in the dream have for you. Try to be as faithful as possible to Freud's method and not wander off into other possible methods of interpretation. Freud claims that all dreams are "disguised fulfillments of repressed wishes" (Gay, 165). Does your dream fit this claim? Explain. (Remember that Freud argues that dreams disguise the wish involved, so be careful in your argument.) Final note: Dreams can be very personal things, so please pick a dream that is not so personal that you would be uncomfortable having your instructor read it.

2. In Civilization and Its Discontents, Freud argues that morality has its roots in aggression. Give a clear explanation of Freud's account of the relationship between morality and aggression. Do you think Freud is right? Explain and give reasons for your view.

3. Come up with a topic of your own. Write down your idea in the form of a brief thesis statement, then come and discuss your proposal with me by Thursday 4/29. If you wish to write on a topic of your own, you must talk with me first.
