The Adult Cognition Lab is my research team in the Psychology Department at Appalachian State University. We are primarily interested in understanding how people learn new things and maintain their skills through the lifespan. When we understand the characteristics of cognition and aging, we can design better learning opportunities for mature adults. Before moving to Boone, I conducted similar research projects at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Syracuse University, under federal grants awarded by the National Institute on Health and the National Institute on Aging.
I am very interested in informing older adults in the Boone area about my research and the opportunity to participate in it. Research participation can benefit individuals in a number of ways. Most directly, I will financially compensate volunteers for their time. Participation also includes less direct benefits. Older adults are given the opportunity to contribute to important scientific advances, interact with their peers as well as with research associates, and learn more about the cognitive changes that occur as people grow older. Because my research focuses on changes across the life span, many of my studies rely on the help of adult volunteers from around the community. This community support is very much appreciated. After all, it is through the generosity and input of volunteers that I am able to gain valuable insight into ways of helping people learn and solve problems more effectively.
The types of studies that I conduct in my lab range from interviews to written tests to computerized tasks. Usually, volunteers participate at a facility on the Appalachian State University campus.
