Our traditional dinner prepared by Italian friends and eaten outside at the front of San Paolo provides an excellent time to relax and enjoy life.

Some of us continue to study and see more geology even on our days off.

Lucio D'Alberto, geology faculty member from Feltre, checks his map while students - Melissa Saurborn ( UNC Chapel Hill) and Avery Roberts (Appalachian) compare notes at the base of the carbonate cliff.

Lucio D'Alberto and Chris Augustine (Appalachian) study soft-sediment folds in a trail-side exposure .

Professor Giampietro Braga of Padua University and Mr. Lamont Leatherman, an Appalachian geology alumnus, compare notes in an alpine meadow near Passo di Rolle. Professor Braga visits us each summer and has hosted our group in Padua on several occasions.

Not every day is sunny. High on the slope of Mt. Magasan in rain and sleet Lori Combs (Appalachian) captures a bedding attitude while Michelle Brewer (Appalachian), Philip Ong (UNC Chapel Hill), and Lucio D'Alberto provide moral support as all wait and shiver.

Look carefully... the parking lot, road, buses, and lake are almost directly below students on this slope that leads up to Belvedere near Marmolada glacier. One cannot map and do field work in this area without climbing some rather steep slopes. The Dolomites are not flat!

Vertical beds of the Scaglia Rossa in this excellent roadside exposure contain well preserved trace fossils. We have measured, described, and interpreted this section a couple of times in the past.

The 1998 class sketches outcrop in Sella Massif area prior to interpreting the sedimentological history of the rocks exposed on the cliffside across the valley from this site.
