In 1973 one of
our station wagons that slid off road to Laurel Bed Lake is being
winched up slope by wrecker that had to travel more than 20 miles
from Broadford to do the job. None of the 5 students in the wagon
were injured and the wagon was able to be driven for the remainder
of camp with only minimal repairs. Note the highway patrolman
in the road on the right.
This group of
1974 students toured the General Shale Brick plant at Rural Retreat.
Although not in this photo, field camp and Tech geology alumnus
R.E. Whittemore is one of General Shale's geologists.
Food was always
tasty, abundant, and prepared with a great deal of care. Cooks
Lois Craig (left) and Barbara Webb (right) prepare a batch of
lasagna while Nancy Craig watches in this 1974 photo. The dessert
that night was chocolate cake.
Students in 1975
and most years made the downhill trek on the Appalachian Trail
across the grassy field on the return from work on nearby Brier
Ridge and Mt. Rogers
This 1976 group
of students relaxes on Middle Ordovician limestone while waiting
for an impromptu lecture to begin at the base of the slope of
Walker Mountain.
Some of the students
from the 1977 class rescued a calf (arrow points to its head)
that was trapped in a tight place among outcrops of Middle Ordovician
limestone (remember the Effna??) in one of the Rich Valley map
areas.
These women from
the 1977 class brought a unique and rare touch of sophistication
to camp and Saltville when they surprised everyone by dressing
for dinner one evening.
