More of Fred Webb's
images of the geology field camp, 1965-1984
Who says scientists
are one dimensional? Ron Kreisa (TA, 1977 and 1978) plays the
harmonica accompanied by Bob Sykes on the fiddle and Sally Webber
on guitar during an evening session in the lounge in 1977.
A group of 1978
students take notes in a setting familiar to 20 years of Tech
field camp people --- the Upper Knox through Juniata Formation
section across Rich Valley and up to the summit of Walker Mountain.
Robbie Cole (left),
Wes Scarlett (Duke University), and Skip Lemanski (right) use
a shady spot beside the departmental van to take notes in 1978.
Volleyball in the
camp parking lot was a field camp tradition all the way back to
the rough and tumble days of Jack Redden in the 1960s. These 1978
students, though talented and tough, had a bit less of the killer
instinct of the Doc Redden era at field camp.
Bill Miller (foreground),
Kent Kane (left) and "JEP" Powers (rear, University
of Rhode Island student) check out a "bottomless" crack
in the Honaker Dolomite located on the flank of the big subsidence
cavity on the high pressure well field above the town of Saltville
in this 1979 photo.
Remember how hot
and muggy the field area was during late June and early July?
These three students in the 1979 group did what most of at least
thought about on such days. They took the plunge into a creek
- clothes and all -near Nebo after a hot day's mapping of the
Nebo Window and Saltville Fault.
The field camp class
of 1980 in the parking lot at Laurel Bed Lake dam in the Clinch
Mountain Wildlife Management area.
Students in 1980
take well-deserved rest on Clinch blocks after a hot 3 mile hike
through tangles of greenbrier, rhododendron, and mountain laurel
thickets along the crest of Brushy Mountain to Clinch Mountain
in the Laurel Bed Lake area.
The class of 1981
poses proudly in front of the field station whose formal name
was Camp Holden.
Rick Ford (TA) contemplating
tire tracks through fresh and still-soft concrete at the VDOT
facility in Chilhowie where we frequently refueled the vans. In
this 1981 photo, perhaps Rick is wondering how those tracks got
there. It was hard to judge side clearance when driving those
vans.
The class of 1983
poses for inspection in front of the field station while Abby
dog- the Webb's faithful companion - parades in front of the group.
