Page 3 --- Geology Summer Field Camp Photos

Students in the 1970 class measuring a section of the Lower Carboniferous Price Formation on Va Rt 16 at the Smyth-Tazewell Counties line. Group shown includes Ron Tucker, Penny Whitten, David Ward, Jim Mulholland (Massachusetts), High Rowlett, John Buckley, John Atthowe, Charles Haag, Raymond Hunnicutt, and others (it's hard to id folks from the back from 35 years ago)

This spectacular bedding plane exposure of mudcracks in the Ordovician Moccasin Formation was exposed during construction of US 58 west of Gate City, VA. This group of students from the field class of 1971 was the first group to study it. Unfortunately, gravity and collectors had reduced most of the extent of this outcrop by early 2000.

This is a classicimage of a geology professor teaching students how to measure the attitude of bedding. Dr. Jim Craig is using an outcrop of the Cambrian Nolichucky Formation to instruct Larry Cooke and Mark Slusarski (striped shirt), members of the 1971 class.

More images coming later.
