Welcome to my website. Here’s a little background about me. The first 18 years of my life were spent in eastern Ohio. Nearly every one of my relatives earned their living mining coal or working in steel mills in this region of the country. I grew up keenly aware of heavy industry and how it affects an entire geographic region. My sister and I were the first in our family to have the opportunity and privilege to attend college. I chose Wittenberg University and graduated in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. It was then off to Lexington, Kentucky for graduate school where I graduated with a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry. My first teaching job after graduate school was as an assistant professor from 1992-1997 at Wheeling Jesuit University. In 1997, I came to Appalachian State University where I have been ever since.
While at Appalachian, I have taught every introductory chemistry lecture and lab course during the last 10 years. I've also taught a junior level descriptive inorganic course that is heavy into industrial processes. Having spent 2 years in industry myself, I'm fascinated at how various reactions taught in undergraduate courses are industrially scaled up. My time in industry has made me keenly aware of the importance of doing things correctly (because doing it wrong has huge financial as well as safety ramifications). I've also taught the senior level inorganic course numerous times.
My personal interests are football and aviation. As an instrument rated private pilot, I’m constantly “looking up” when an aircraft flies over. However, with a wife and three small children, I have very little free time (or money) these days for aviating. I still manage to watch my share of football, primarily the Cleveland Browns and the University of Kentucky Wildcats (.......it's OK to laugh, everyone else does too !!!!)
