This course is an introduction to digital production workflow application relevant to the graphic communications industry, primarily using Adobe software. Specific topics include production hardware, page layout, imposition, illustration, image processing, input and output devices, digital file storage, asset management, and proofing technologies. Students are introduced to real-world, client-based projects. I assigned the Ivory Tower Brand Label Design project to students from all sections of my Digital Media Composition I class. Students were asked to present a logo concept and worked on digital creations of their logos.
I submitted the student designs to Wine Specialist, Louis Conradie. Conradie shared feedback from his team in the department of Fermentation Sciences. After narrowing it down to about 10 student designs, I met with student finalists to discuss revisions.
After COVID-19, we moved our meetings online. I met all of my students in Zoom to review revised designs. After a second round of submissions, Louis Conradie and I discussed the revisions and narrowed the selection to 3 finalists. A student designer, Madison Christy, was selected to finalize the label for a cider product. Louis' department decided to go with a new logo for "The Scholar" brand of wines rather than a new Ivory Tower logo.
During the Fall 2021 semester, I presented the wine label project to my classes. Louis chose the winning logo and design for "The Scholar." I worked with the student designer, Amanda Gaspard, to finalize the label design. In Spring 2021, we joined the Phoenix Challenge (flexography print) team at Appalachian's Graphic Communications Management program to print and produce the labels.
