FL 5530: Guidelines for Virtual Classes |
In order to explore and experience the differences between face-to-face and online learning, we will be conducting one "virtual" class each week in FL 5530. In order to make these virtual classes as relevant as possible, it's important that everyone participate fully in the assigned class activities. More detailed guidelines for each virtual class are provided below: Thursday, July 12: In this class we will share ideas for our personal pages with the rest of the class on our AsULearn page (http://asulearn.appstate.edu/). You will also use this time to work on building your own web page using Google Sites or another platform of your choice (WordPress is also a good option), and you can post questions or problems you're having on the AsULearn forum as well. Thursday, July 19: For this second virtual class, we will create and share ideas for activities based on online audio and video. Each student will find an authentic (i.e. not designed for students) target-language video or audio clip online (through YouTube, TeacherTube, Vimeo or other similar sites/programs) and then sketch out ideas for 2-3 classroom activities and assignments you could use with it. You should share both the video/audio and your ideas for activities with the other class participants on our AsULearn site (http://asulearn.appstate.edu/). I would also like you to post one video that you feel would NOT be appropriate for use in class (don't make it too inappropriate, please!) Thursday, July 26: In our third virtual class, we'll chat about chat and delve into the world of text messaging. First, visit this short glossary of emoticons and acronyms. Then go to the AsULearn pageand respond to the post there with your thoughts about the differences between face to face and online communication. Then, visit our class wiki (http://appalachiancall.pbworks.com), where you'll find a group activity centered around the "language" of text messaging. |
