Summer - Fall 2021 Schedule
Summer: I am working with two students on individual projects. I will be on campus on most MWF days from around 10 to around 3.
Fall: I am teaching MAT 2310 Computational Mathematics and MAT 3310 Discrete and Continuous Modeling. Hopefully these courses will be face-to-face in the fall.

I have served on the Mathematical Association of America's Committee on the Mathematical Education of Teachers (COMET) from 2009 through 2014, and on the Education Committees and as coordinator for the Mathematics Workshop sessions for Super Computing 2011 (SC11) and Super Computing 2010 (SC10). I also served as regional coordinator for the Mathematical Association of America's Preparing Mathematicians to Educate Teachers (PMET) initiative and as co-PI on the NSF funded National Computational Science Institute and Shodor Computational Science Institute. I also help when I can with Project Interactivate and other mathematics and computational science initiatives at The Shodor Education Foundation.
On campus, I have served as the math MA program director / co-director (1995-2005, 2013-2020), and I served as Associate Dean in the Cratis Williams Graduate School (2005-2013) during which time I was responsible for and supervised staff in graduate recruiting, admissions, assistantships, and records. In that capacity I served on many University committees and as secretary for the North Carolina Conference of Graduate Schools.
I am married to Dr. Jeff Hirst, also a professor of mathematics at Appalachian. We both love mathematics, cooking, music, science fiction, hiking (especially in the NC High Country), traveling (especially to St. John USVI), and living in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. We share our home with our three furry children: June, Remi, and Henry.
