Questions to Ponder before Test 3

[Bring a ruler to the test. Be prepared to draw diagrams.]

1. What is the horopter? What is special about the retinal images of objects that are on the horopter? What is special about the horopter in terms of describing everyday depth perception?

2. Diagram two objects, one of which is in front of the horopter and another object that is beyond the horopter, and indicate where their retinal images will be located. Use this diagram to explain the concept of retinal disparity as a cue to depth.

3. What is an anaglyph? Be able to explain how an anaglyph is constructed to create a depth illusion.

4. What is a monocular depth cue? Name 3 types of monocular cues and provide examples.

5. What is an "Ames room"? Be able to explain how an Ames room is constructed to create its illusion. Is it a size illusion or a depth illusion?

6. Be able to explain how motion parallax contributes to the location of objects in space.

7. Be able to diagram and explain the case of "speed constancy."

8. Be able to diagram and explain "corollary discharge theory."

9. What were 3 examples discussed in class to consider the issue of classification of movement of the retinal image as due to eye movement versus object movement? Explain how corollary discharge theory accounts for the 3 examples.

10. What is the autokinetic effect? Explain how corollary discharge theory accounts for that effect. Should the effect increase or decrease if your body is swaying slightly?

11. What are the two types of stroboscopic motion illusions? What is seen in each case? Which one did Gestalt psychology consider more important? Why?
