Descartes/Hall vs. Pavlov/Skinner |
One reason that many people have difficulty with using the term "reflex" is that the term has at least two very different meanings. The Descartes/Hall tradition uses the term to indicate behavior that is rigid, simple, and occurs without volition. Pavlov/Skinner use the term to mean a lawful or systematic relationship. How is the term used in your area of interest? Find a use of the term "reflex" in your area. Describe how it is used or defined and explain whether it is in the Descartes/Hall or Pavlov/Skinner tradition. (I have seen the term defined as both without any indication that the definitions did not coincide.) |
