Possible Classical Conditioning Questions

1. Compare and contrast the use of the term "reflex" by Descartes, Hall, Pavlov, and Skinner.

2. Describe the classical conditioning procedure as investigated by Pavlov and label the components of the procedure. What is a "conditioned reflex"?

3. Describe the extinction procedure. Explain the spontaneous recovery effect and the rapid reacquisition effect. What causes these effects to occur according to Pavlov and according to Bouton?  Who makes the stronger case and why?

4. Rescorla (1988) points to work by himself as changing the interpretation of the classical conditioning effect. What was done? What was found? How did these results change our view of classical conditioning?

5. Describe a situation from your area of professional interest (or personal interest or just make up an example) in which you suspect shoulf contain a a strong classical conditioning component. Why would you say it should contain a classical conditioning component?  What would make one stimulus a strong CS+ and another a weak CS+ (or CS-) according to a contiguity analysis vs. a contingency analysis? Be able to explain using an example case or analyze using an example case.

6. What is Kamin's "blocking effect"? Why is it so important?  How does it change our approach to identifying the UCS in a conditioning situation, compared to Pavlov? Which approach would you use?  Explain using a concrete example.

7. Describe a situation from your area of professional interest (or personal interest or just make up an example) in which you suspect contains a strong classical conditioning component. What makes it a classical conditioning procedure? Explain how Pavlov and Kamin would want you to identify the potential UCS.  Could gambling or shopping be a strong UCS from their perspectives?  Why or why not?

8. What is Pavlov's rule to identify the Conditioned Response? Explain Solomon's Opponent Process theory using a concrete example from daily life. What does it say about how to think about identifying CRs?  Identify Hedonic reactions to stimuli?

9. Apply Siegel's conditioning model of addiction to the case of coffee drinking. (Assume that caffeine is the UCS.) How does he explain tolerance, craving, and withdrawal effects? What should be the effect of drinking decaffeinated coffee according to Siegel? What should be the effect according to Pavlov?

10. A current topic of interest is how to think about the function of a CS.  Is it best described as working through contiguity or contingency?  Use Pavlov's dog in the stand to explain the issue.  Explain the one most-important effect or result or experiment-to-be-done that would best explain your answer and how it applies to the dog n Pavlov's lab.

11. [NARQ:  Not a real question] Did you ever think you would know this much about classical conditioning?
