Possible Instrumental/Operant Conditioning Questions

1. Describe Paul Meehl's approach to the Law of Effect. Describe B. F. Skinner's approach to the Law of Effect. In your area of interest, describe a situation where it makes more sense to use Meehl's approach and where it makes more sense to use Skinner's approach. In each case, explain why the other approach is less useful in that situation.

2. Describe David Premack's approach to the Law of Effect. How is it similar to and different from the approach of Meehl and Skinner? In your area of interest, describe the application of all 3 approaches to a concrete situation.

3. Describe the Timberlake and Allison approach to the Law of Effect. How is it similar to and different from the approach of Premack? In your area of interest, describe the application of both approaches to a concrete situation.

4. A parent comes to you for help to get her 13 year-old son “Tim” to complete his homework.  Everybody (from advice columns in the newspaper to her church pastor) tells her that she needs to reward him for doing so; but she is unsure about how to pick a reward.  What advice would Hull, Meehl, Skinner, Premack, Response Deprivation theory, and Guthrie give about picking a reward for Tim?

5. Some people believe that the Law of Effect operates in the following fashion. A rewarded response increments the tendency to repeat that response and a non-rewarded response decrements the tendency to repeat that response. What do reinforcement schedule effects say about this position?

6. We often use a smile as a reinforcer for socially appropriate behavior. Describe hypothetical situations involving a multiple schedule and a concurrent schedule to explain changes in the efficacy of a smile.

7. According to Solomon, avoidance behavior is very hard to extinguish. Why? Explain his answer and apply to a concrete situation.
