When teaching language classes, I believe that it is essential to make language learning both relevant and authentic. In my classroom, this involves integrating culture as much as possible and focusing on communicating in the language rather than simply learning about it. I am glad to be teaching in what many have termed the "post-methods era", where we are not constrained by any one method or set of rules for teaching.

Both in language classes and in upper-level courses in linguistics, literature and cultural studies, I strive to be clear in my explanations of material and in my expectations for the class. I believe that students deserve meaningful assignments, class activities and discussions. I also believe in respecting different opinions while encouraging students to think critically about the issues at hand. Finally, in classes at all levels, I believe in setting high standards for student work and academic integrity. My experience has been that when expectations are both clear and fair, students have no problem rising to the challenge.
