Anna Levi Sonnino was the youngest daughter in a large family and grew up with a doting grandfather who picked her up at school.  She spent her childhood in a household filled with the friends of her older siblings.  At first, her family took in Jews escaping from other parts of Europe and heard about the horrors that were so close.  Later, the family escaped to Switzerland themselves, with the help of Anna Sala, the heroine of Sonnino’s life.
