Aurelio Ascoli’s father worked for a bank, and the president of the bank tipped him off about the family’s imminent arrest and seizure.  After the family escaped to Switzerland, Aurelio was separated from his father and was put in a camp. On the cusp of adulthood, Aurelio took on the responsibilities of a person much older. In addition, he experienced his first teenage romance in Switzerland.
