Born in Tripoli, Guido Hassan came to Italy as a young child. After the rise of the fascists, he recalls a terrifying train ride in which he and his little sister were in one area of the train and his parents were in another. He and his sister had been instructed not to show any outward signs that they were part of the same family, in case the parents were arrested. Even today, he remembers his fear. His father lost all financial security after the war, and the wartime stress affected his parents’ marriage.
