Nedo Fiano was arrested in Florence, Italy, and was the only one of the interviewees who was in Auschwitz. Nedo’s grandfather insisted that Nedo learn German, much to his irritation. However, his facility with the language allowed Nedo to serve as an interpreter for the camp guards. He felt he survived the subhuman conditions because he dreamed of a better world. Even today he puzzles over what turned the SS men into criminals. He lives with the knowledge that his mother, sister, and father did not survive.
