Sandrino Lopez was a very young boy when he, his mother, his grandmother, and his siblings escaped from Milan.  Later, he and his grandmother separated from the rest of the family.  The two of them hid in a small mountain village, where they spent the war years protected by villagers.  Not only did he enjoy the friendship he made in this environment, but in the village he learned that he preferred country to city life.
