“I love to teach, and as both a teacher and a researcher, it allows me to share new knowledge with my students,” says Dr. Dawn Medlin, one of the expert faculty members in the Department of Computer Information Systems and Supply Chain Management.
Her research is in the areas of security, health care information systems, Web page development and design, and the interaction between computers and people. She received a 2014 Sywassink Award for Excellence from the Walker College of Business and has been published in prominent journals such as the International Journal of Advanced Computer Science and Applications, Computers in Human Behavior and the Journal of Information Technology Management.
Medlin is also the founder of Women of Walker (WoW), a mentoring program to accelerate the professional development, personal growth and leadership abilities for female business majors.
Why should a student choose Appalachian to study CIS? “There are many reasons,” Medlin said. “The classes are small and therefore students get one-on-one time with their professors, we have the highest job placement rate in the Walker College of Business and we are constantly updating our curriculum to include current topics. Additionally, many of the classes are conducted in computer labs, allowing our students to participate in demonstration-type activities that involve many different topics and technologies.”
