Faculty Profile: Derek Gagnier

Derek Gagnier is associate professor of theatre and coordinator of the Theatre Arts (BA) - Performance degree. He holds an MFA in Acting from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill/Professional Actor Training Program.

Gagnier has taught acting at the college level since 1987, and has been a faculty member formally since 1994. He has worked professionally as an actor and director since 1983. His acting work includes musical theatre, Shakespeare, dinner theatre, television and film.

Most recent work includes acting in productions of “Frankenstein” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” at Ensemble Stage in Blowing Rock, “The Tempest” and “Peter Pan” at Blowing Rock Stage Company, “Rounding Third” and “Over the River and through the Woods” at The Broach Theatre.

His directing and dialect coaching include turns at Blowing Rock Stage Company, The Barn Dinner Theatre, The Broach Theatre and Ensemble Stage, where he is next slated to direct “The Voyages of Simbad.”

Gagnier is a dialects consultant for Babel Consultants, which has international clients. His most recent dialect coaching was on the movie “The World Made Straight,” coaching actors Noah Wyle, Jeremy Irvine, Haley Joel Osment and Minka Kelly.

  • Department of Theatre and Dance

    The Department of Theatre and Dance is one of seven departments housed in Appalachian’s College of Fine and Applied Arts. Its mission is to facilitate transformative experiences for students and the public, which cultivate compassionate, creative and collaborative communities through theatre and dance. The department also offers coursework for integrated learning through the arts to the general university student population. Its dynamic cocurricular production program provides exemplary theatre and dance experiences to departmental students, the university community and the region.     The College of Fine and Applied Arts houses seven departments: Applied Design, Art, Communication, Military Science and Leadership, Sustainable Development, Sustainable Design and the Built Environment, and Theatre and Dance.
